larger catchment area but there is more chance of this catchment
being contaminated.
The coffer dan is estimated for two rows of
12"x12" squared pitch pine piles driven 40 feet into the ground.
The two rows of piles driven 10 feet apart and the ground between
excavated to a considerable depth and filled in with Whampoa mud.
The erection of temporary pumps, to deal with
the leakage of sea and fresh water into the dam trench, should
present no difficulty.
The estimate includes an iter for the pur-
-chase of purps as well as for the cost of pumping one million
gallons a day for two years.

Dam.
BARTH DAM.
the Dan is designed as an earth dam with a
concrete core below ground and a Whampoa mud core above ground.
The upstream slope of the dam is a 3 to 1
slope formed of selected filling material and pitched with good
stone set in cement mortar.
The down-stream slope of the dam can be
formed of the excavation from the byewash channel. It is shewn as
a 2 to 1 slope terminating in a level benching and a sea wall.
The ground over the base of the dan will
have to be excavated to an average depth of say 10 feet. This
can either be done by dredging before the coffer dam is completed
or else it can be excavated, by coolie Imbour, after the coffer
dan is completed.
The trench for the concrete core is suffi-
-ciently wide to make excavation at the deep levels fairly easy
and by filling the excavated trench with good cement concrete a
watertight base should be obtained.
