The markets served by the destern route are Tsun Wan and
Un Long, the largest market in the New Territory. The Lastern route
passes by the srail rarket town of Tai Fo. both routes pass near Sher
Chun, the largest market town in the San un District in Chinese Terri-
tory; the trade of Shan Chun is from four to five tires as great as
that of un Long.
At Isun Man there are a few shops supplying the local needs.
Goods are taken to and from Hongwong and Tsun Man by junks. Water con-
munication is good end the distance short.
Un Long is a market town of 74 shops of which 25 are large
and deal in rice, 011, sanshu etc. The remainder belong to barbers,
doctors, jewellers, vegetable sellers, piecę goods desiers etc. In cor-
bination with the San Hing Lung firm the total exports and imports be-
tween Hongkong and Un Long amount to about 350,000 piouls annually
besides live stock (pigs, ducks and chickens). This trade is carried
by junks, of which there are three (opacity 400 to 800 ciculs) running
regularly. Uwing to the shallowness of the water in Deep bay and un
Long creek, only redium sized junks can approach un Long. Carriage is
cents a picul for rice and heavy goods and 10 cents a pioul for mis-
cellaneous goods. The journey takes at least one and a half days.
The average daily trade, throughout the whole
year, done
at un Long is acout $9,500 to $4,000. The chief exports and imports
are rice (170,000 piouis) ground nuts (20,000) sugar (14,000) nut-cil
(4,500) the remainder including sar-shu, beans, bean curds, miscella-
necus goods (piece goods etc.), about 3,000 pigs and a large number of
ducks and chickens. Almost 1/3 of this trade passes through the hands
of the San King Lune firm. Varkets are held every third day.
The Tai Frarket on the Eastern route, is a smaller business
centre. The market consists of large shops (rice, oil, sanshu etc)
and
