But we may say which attorneys about 3,000 feet above cultivation, except to is impossible.

Maximum Rear Leuch of which very limited extent, on account of the steepness of the hill sides, is capable of cultivation has already been taken up by the Chinese inhabitants; this land is situated at all altitudes to about 1500 feet above the cultivation.

Wherever conditions, in places where it is possible by terracing to render the surface sufficiently level, this land is only in hill sides but in rather small patches and larger pieces in the bottoms of small valleys. On the other side of the territory, below the bases of the high hills on Deep Bay and the Form Chun river to the north, then south and on to the comparatively large areas of good low-lying lands which are more than about 50 feet above sea level, but mostly much less than that.

Similar to the mainland in topography, Lantau has two fairly large areas of cultivated land, one being about the middle of the northern side and the other occupying a corresponding position on the southern side. The remainder of Lantau is similar to the hills on the mainland and has but little cultivation, as the hills are still steeper and have peaks of about 3000 feet above sea level. Cultivation on the Lerna islands is very limited. The other numerous smaller islands included in the territory need not be taken into account in this connection.

I am not aware that the persons who were employed in surveying the New Territory have furnished complete returns of cultivated lands, but for present purposes, I should say, a very rough estimate that the total area of cultivated lands on the mainland and on the other islands, notably Lantau, is not more than 10,000 acres. This land is practically all laid out in a terrace system, and most of it is cultivable.
