Leeds copies of despatch from Peking re: the negotiations for Canton Railway. Extract has been sent.
(Minutes.)
Mr Lucas
This is very interesting.
Last despatch from Peking reported the Portuguese intention to negotiate a line from Macau to the Do. Kuning Canton.
We are keenly interested in any railway schemes that might affect the trade.
We must keep this knowledge to ourselves.
Gr. Further despatch from Swatow reports now having been in negotiation for some months.
The warm thanks of the Portuguese Plenipotentiary for assisting in the negotiation of a treaty which the latter duly signed.
It was understood at the DO!! that a concession for this Miral railway was to be granted.
This is how British interests are understood at present.
All we can do is to hurry up.

We must proceed with our work as fast as possible.
I do not agree that this should be done.
