SECTION OUT 04
No. 1.
(No. 309.) My Lord,
Sir E. Satow to the Marquess of Lansdowne.--(Received October 10.)
Peking, August 24, 1904.
WITH reference to my despatch No. 264 of the 27th July, I have the honour to inform your Lordship that I have received a despatch from His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, dated the 11th instant, in which he informs me that, by arrangement with the Hoppo, officers of the Imperial Maritime Customs are about to visit Ch'en-ts'un and Fatshan to make the necessary dispositions for the handing over of those two stations.
I understand from Mr. Campbell that, in spite of the decree abolishing the Hoppo and transferring his duties to the Viceroy, the former shows the strength of his position at Court by still staying on at Canton.
He adds that in any case the two stations will be handed over by the 10th September, the date privately stipulated between Mr. Campbell and the Hoppo.
I have, &c. (Signed) ERNEST SATOW.
