I am directed by the Board of Customs to acquaint
you, for the information of the Secretary of State for
Foreign Affairs, with reference to the Foreign Enlist-
ment Act of 1870, that it has been reported to them
that the British Steam Screw Vessel "Canton", register-
ed at the port of London, is about to be sold.
The present owners of this vessel are the Indo-
China Steam Navigation Company Limited, of 29, Cornhill,
E.C., and a certificate of sale was issued on the 23rd
instant in favour of Mr. William Jardine Gresson and
Mr. Henry Keswick, Merchants, of Hongkong and Shanghai.
It has been rumoured that the "Canton" has already
been sold to Russian subjects, but the representatives
of the owners are unable at present to state whether
