Ref 5 JUL

June 30th, 1904.

I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to

acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th

instant, relating to the sale of the Steam Ship

"Jesmond" to a Japanese purchaser.

I am, in reply, to suggest, for the considera-

tion of Mr. Secretary Lyttelton, that the same course

should be followed as in the cases of the "Ohio" and

"Mascotte", viz:- that the Governor of Hongkong

should be informed of the circumstances, and be re-

quested to observe and report on the movements of

the vessel on her arrival at that port.

I am,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,

Hilgempbell

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
