My dear Campbell:-
I have received your two notes of the 10th and 11th instant, and quite agree that ... is the best course to adopt in order to avoid any possible complications after the matter has left the hands of the Viceroy.
As regards ..., I have now good reason to believe that the statement made to you of his death is correct. Nothing further therefore need be done about him. The case of ... I leave to your discretion, as also the question as to whether you should send an officer to be present at Chang's execution.
As to the terms I am quite satisfied with them and have no doubt whatever that the Secretary of State will be equally so.
I return your last enclosure of which I have kept a copy.
