be able to remain in Hong Kong,

Mr. Wilson further consented to pay her passage from Hong Kong to

London, without however acknowledging any liability

in the matter. Instead of leaving by the first opportunity, it appears that Miss Garrett remained in

Hong Kong for some 3 or 4 weeks, and for this delay

Mr. Wilson disclaims all responsibility. He urges

with truth that any arrangements then come to by

Miss Garrett with his lawyers could have been equally

well made in the first instance without her coming

to Amoy at all, thus avoiding the scandal and annoyance, not to mention the expense, to which he was

subsequently subjected. Mr. Wilson having already

paid all Miss Garrett's expenses here and voluntarily

provided her passage money from Amoy to London, and

having further paid her a sum of £50 before she left

Hong Kong, I venture to think that the cost of her

maintenance there should have been defrayed either

by herself, or by the authorities who allowed her to

remain.

Miss Garrett is a native of the United Kingdom,

but I regret that I am unable to procure any further

information with regard to her alleged relatives living in Hull.

(Signed)

I have &c.,

P.F. Hausser.

Consul.
