Sir:-

With reference to the letter from this Office of the 9th ultimo I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies, a copy of a despatch which has been received from His Majesty's Chief Justice at Shanghai enclosing a correspondence between himself and His Majesty's Consul at Amoy respecting the deportation of Miss Garrett from Amoy to Hong Kong.

I am to say that in view of the circumstances stated in the 2nd paragraph of the letter from His Majesty's Consul to the Chief Justice of the 2nd of February, Lord Lansdowne feels himself unable to admit any liability in respect of Miss Garrett's deportation.

I am, Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble Servant,

Charles Hardinge.
