October 1st, and expressed my surprise that the investigation of the case had been placed in his hands, it being the Admiral who, with a view to obtaining the reward offered and gaining official credit, had sent the officers to Hongkong to try and effect the capture of Hung Ch'uan-fu; I reminded them that the body of the murdered man had been taken to a place near Fu Mun, the Admiral's Headquarters, and requested in conclusion that he might be brought to trial with the other culprits.
I have received a reply from the Board that they have again instructed the Viceroy to make a thorough investigation and will communicate further with me in due course.
I have informed the Government of Hongkong of the above.
