to agree that in the event of the area now under consideration being no longer required to be reserved for the exclusive use of this Department the additional rights which the War Department is now seeking to acquire should be restored to the Colony on the same terms as those on which the War Department is now obtaining them.

6. It is proposed by the Council that the amount of the credit when ascertained should be recorded in favour of the Colony in the Colonial Military Lands Account. The Colonial Government is understood to have made the suggestion that the matter should be included in the question of exchanges of land now under consideration, but the Council is of opinion that it would be better and more expeditious to treat this transaction separately.

7. Meanwhile I am to beg that Mr. Secretary Lyttelton will have the goodness to direct the Governor to put the local Military Authorities in exclusive possession of the land with as little delay as possible.
