I left the Mauritius on leave sometime in 1879 February, I think. My services from the date I joined in February 1871 being duly considered and allowed; being moreover allowed a third of my passage money which, as far as I can remember, had been generally disallowed from some time in 1871 after I had joined, thereby showing that my services were reckoned as from the date I joined, viz: the 21st February 1871. Correspondence on record will show this.
6. I cannot understand, therefore, that considering the appointment I held in Mauritius, which was one of 1500 rupees a year rising to 2500 rupees, and that I had served 9 years in the Colony, which includes my half-pay leave, with the extra allowance made for climate, I should only draw 220 rupees a year from Mauritius.
7. It is evident that a serious mistake to my detriment has been committed: and that probably my services in the Straits Settlements and in Hong Kong have, in consequence, been calculated on the wrong scale.
8. With regard to my Straits Settlements and Hong Kong pensions, may I also enquire if the usual allowances for climate and professional services have been included: also if I am right in believing that at the time of my appointment as Sheriff of Singapore, the dollar for pension purposes had not yet been reduced to 3/8, at any rate as regards those officers who had joined years before.
9. In regard to par: 4 of your letter relative to my contribution to the Widows' & Orphans' Fund, I deeply regret that I am unable to contribute anything from my pensions over and above the lowest amount I may be permitted by more recent rules or otherwise.
