In accordance with the instruction conveyed

in Mr. Chamberlain's despatch of the 23rd May, 1893, in
which it was laid down that no further lease of Crown Land
should be granted for a period of 999 years without in each
case a reference to the Secretary of State, I have the honour
to inform you that Messrs. Butterfield & Swire who are con-
structing a shipyard at Quarry Bay have applied for a lease
of land of an approximate area of 34 acres, as shown on
attached tracing, for the purpose of making a storage reser-
voir in connection with the shipyard.

Mr. Chamberlain in his despatch No.38 of the
31st January 1902, approved the lease of Quarry Bay Marine
Lots 2 and 3 on which the shipyard stands for a period of
999 years and I have therefore the honour to recommend that
this additional area be leased for a like period on condition
that it is used for the storage of water for the use of the
shipyard and for no other purpose.
