prosecuted when the Hongkong Police had ascertained where these men were to be found. Information has since been received, which is believed to be perfectly reliable, that Tung Cheung was executed in China at the end of August or commencement of September last on some charge brought against him at Canton.
There remains Ng Shui Shang against whom the Acting Consul-General stated in his letter above referred to that the evidence was weak. It has since been still further weakened by the death of Kong Neau Ying, the principal witness against him. The Chinese Government have recently applied for the extradition of the two remaining witnesses, Kong Kung Hi and Kong Kai, on a charge of robbery in Chinese Territory. The application has not been granted but shows how unlikely it is that the evidence of these witnesses would be available to convict Ng Shui Shang in a Chinese Court.
6. The present state of the whole case may thus be summarised as follows:-
Of the four persons believed to have actually perpetrated the crime:
Chan Lam Tsai, after being rewarded with $2,000 and a button of the 5th rank, was decapitated in December, 1901, nominally for conspiring against Chinese Officials, but, it is believed, actually to prevent his making inconvenient disclosures.
Lui Chui alias Li Kwai Fan, after being similarly rewarded, was hanged at Hongkong on June 17th, 1903.
Tung Cheung, after being similarly rewarded, was decapitated in August or September, 1904, on a charge brought against him in the Chinese Courts.
