Instructions having been received from the War Office for the selection of a site for Howitzer emplacements on a spur to the N.E. of Sywan Hill, and His Excellency the Major-General Commanding having approved of the site shown in the accompanying plan 'A', I have the honour to request that the Colonial Government may be informed of this proposal, as well as of the proposed Infantry Redoubt on Sywan hill.
It would be desirable that the ground tinted yellow in the plan 'A' should be treated as a Military Reserve and that no portion of it should be alienated or disposed of on lease without the consent of the Military Authorities; it is not necessary, however, to interfere with quarrying operations except where they are likely to affect proposed works, or with cultivation except within the radius of 300 yards of occupied buildings already arranged for.
I attach a further plan 'B' on an enlarged scale showing marked × two quarries which may interfere with the Howitzer emplacements. It is desirable that quarrying at these two places should be discontinued, or at any rate that a limit should be set beyond which it should not go; I shall be happy to consider in concert with the Surveyor-General where such a limit should be fixed.
