No. 280.

Hongkong.

wo 18018

Sir,

Government House,

Hongkong, 6th July, 1904.

With reference to your Despatch No. 162 enclosing a copy of a letter from the War Office on the subject of the Military Contribution payable by this Colony, I have the honour to inform you that the figures quoted in the letter referred to as the amount payable monthly appear to be based on a misapprehension. The amount provided in the Estimates for adjustment of the previous year's contribution has evidently been regarded as a part of the total for 1904.

The actual figures are as follows:-

20% on Estimated Revenue $170,041. Adjustment of previous year $50,895. Total $1,292,557.

The ordinary sum payable monthly during the current year is therefore $103,471 being one twelfth of the estimated amount viz:- $1,241,662.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

Amay

Officer Administering the Government.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ALFRED LYTTELTON, K.C., M.P.,
