This Officer, Mr. Campbell, was successful in obtaining an undertaking from the Viceroy that my demand would be met, and I thereupon agreed to the following terms of settlement.

1. Removal of Admiral Ho from office to be obtained by a Memorial to the Throne by the Viceroy.

2. All minor officials who received rewards or are otherwise found guilty of connivance in this case to be impeached by the Viceroy in a Memorial to the Throne and cashiered.

3. The murderer Cheung Cho-ting to be executed in the presence of a Consular Officer.

4. A letter to be sent by the Viceroy through His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton conveying an apology for the infringement of the territorial rights of the Colony.

5. When all the conditions above mentioned shall have been carried out, the Hung Case to be considered closed.

The conditions have now been fulfilled, as the enclosed copy of correspondence which I have laid on the table of the Council shows, and I trust that the settlement, which had the approval of His Majesty's Minister at Peking before it was concluded, meets with your approval. On behalf of this Government, I have thanked Mr. C. W. Campbell for the valuable assistance rendered by him in bringing this case to settlement, and I shall be obliged if you will inform His Majesty's Minister for Foreign Affairs accordingly.
