With reference to Sir Henry Blake's Despatch marked 'Confidential' of the 21st August last, I have the honour to inform you that in view of the remarks contained in the enclosed copy of a Despatch dated the 8th October last from His Britannic Majesty's Minister at Peking, steps were taken through His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at Canton to induce the Viceroy there to bring the persons implicated in the case to justice.
2. In the result the man Cheung Cho-ting was brought to trial, the witnesses in the case being sent to Canton under charge of members of the Hongkong Police with whom was Mr. E. R. Hallifax, Acting Deputy Superintendent. After a protracted trial the accused was convicted. He was subsequently executed in the presence of Consular Officers.
3. With regard to Admiral Ho and certain minor Officials implicated in this case, I insisted through His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton on the removal of Admiral Ho from his present office and intimated that I could not accept any settlement which did not include the punishment of
