Kowloon Point: Rearrangement of Roads, etc.
The proposals now submitted have originated under the following circumstances.
The whole of the lots fronting the Harbour, South of the Naval Yard and extending to Kowloon Point, are owned and occupied by the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company who carry on an extensive warehousing business, many of the large steamers which frequent the port discharging or loading their cargoes at the piers which project from the Praya and are owned by the Company. The roadway in front of the lots is consequently much obstructed by the Company in carrying on their business, especially as they have lines of tramway with turn-tables, etc., on the roadway along the entire extent of their frontage. These lines were authorised originally by Ordinance No. 19 of 1884 and may be regarded as essential for the Company's business. Among the goods landed are large logs of timber, iron beams and girders, machinery and other articles of great size and weight, and, as may be imagined, the maintenance of the surface of the roadway in a proper condition as a public thoroughfare is almost impracticable.
The principal ferry between Hongkong and Kowloon runs to the pier marked "A" on the accompanying plan, the traffic being very great. The common mode of travelling in Kowloon is by "ricksha", these vehicles, both public and private being in attendance at the Ferry Pier. Partly from the Company's operations
