I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 34 of the 25th January last on the subject of Cotton Cultivation and to inform you that I requested the Superintendent of the Botanical and Afforestation Department to consult the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce and Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Company, this firm being, as you are aware, the General Managers of the only Cotton Spinning Mill in the Colony.

I enclose a copy of a letter which the Superintendent of the Botanical and Afforestation Department has addressed to the Director of the Royal Gardens at Kew on the subject.
