In reply to your Confidential Despatch of the 8th ultimo, I have the honour to inform you that under Section 88 of Ordinance 10 of 1890 (copy of which is enclosed) a Police Magistrate may sentence any offender to be publicly exposed in the stocks for a period not exceeding six hours.

It is a punishment that has been frequently resorted to in the past by different Police Magistrates. The period of exposure is, as you will observe, limited to 6 hours and no ill effects have in the past followed an exposure of that duration.
