appropriating the area as a waterworks area and excluding the possibility of its being granted for other purposes.

We also think that with so large an area as 1,000 acres provision need not be made for so heavy a "run-off" as from a smaller area, as it is likely that a heavy rainfall will often be uniform over an area measuring 3 miles by 1 mile.

We find that on a dry year such as 1901 the water we might expect to obtain from No. 1 would be as follows:-

Rainfall.55 inches. Deduct evaporation &c.20 35 Deduct amount failing at rate of over 1½ per hour..nil.

400 acres × 20 inches × 32,000 gallons = 178,000,000 gallons. Treating 2, 3, & 4 in the same way we obtain these results:-

2. 1,000 × 20 × 28,000 = 440,000,000 gallons.

3. 1,000 × 19 × 22,000 = 396,000,000 gallons.

4. same as 1 = 178,000,000 gallons.

At this stage we are unable to furnish a detailed estimate of cost but we believe the approximate cost would be as follows:-

1.$40,000. 2.$287,000. 3.$120,000. 4.$95,000

On receipt of your instructions in the matter we will proceed with the preparation of the contract drawings &c...

Yours faithfully,

(Sd.) Denison, Ram and Gibbs.
