The estimate for the catchwater given in 1901 when submitting the scheme was $40,000; the two alternatives now submitted are estimated roughly to cost $120,000 and $95,000 respectively. The excess in the one case over the original estimate is $80,000; in the other $55,000.
It will undoubtedly be more economical to proceed with the entire work at once and on that account I recommend that it be sanctioned subject to the rough estimate given being confirmed by the Engineers in the first instance, when fuller details are available.
