With reference to the 4th paragraph of your Despatch No. 449 of the 17th December last, I have the honour to transmit for your information the enclosed Return shewing the area and estimated value of charitable grants of Crown Land made during the last twenty years. The values must be regarded as only approximate, but they have been assessed on the supposition that the land had been sold by auction in the ordinary way.
2. If the list appears to be a somewhat formidable one, I would point out that applications for land for religious and charitable purposes are more frequent than elsewhere owing to the rapid growth of the population and social responsibilities of this Colony. Building land in accessible situations is of small extent, and therefore of such value that religious and charitable institutions are in most cases unable to bid for land in the open market. I am of opinion that care has always been exercised by the Government hitherto in considering the applications that are constantly received from such institutions, and it does not appear that Government has been too lavish in recommending free grants.
