show whether centre-or side pole construction is intended.
I was about the last-mentioned however that the company's representatives induced the government to invest in the draft Bill, authorizing the construction of the Tramway, the limit of 4 feet to be maintained by the Company between the tracks as they would not require more, and the statements do not otherwise appear to coincide.
With the amount of traffic that occurs along Praya East, it would be out of the question to allow centro-pole construction and my refusal to adopt that form of construction had nothing whatever to do with the excision of the strip of concrete between the rails.
I may add that if the Company consider that I have abused the powers vested in me, they have their remedy under the Tramway Ordinance and should avail themselves of it.
In conclusion, I beg to state that my endeavour throughout has been to protect the interests of the public which I presume must be paramount and my efforts have met with the strongest possible opposition on the part of Messrs Dickinson & Co.
I have the honour to be, Sir, Your Obedient servant,
W. Chatham,
Director of Public Works
