It was about the late last-mentioned, however, that the Company's representatives intend the Government to insert in the draft Bill, authorizing the construction of the tramway, the clause that a clear space of 4 feet is to be maintained by the Company between the tracks and the roadway, which would not require store, and the statements do not therefore appear to coincide.

With the amount of traffic that occurs along Fraser Road, it would be out of the question to allow centre-pole construction, and my refusal. The proposal to adopt that form of construction had nothing whatever to do with the omission of the strip of concrete between the rails.

I may add that if the Company consider that I have abused the powers vested in me, they have their remedy under the Tramway Ordinance and should avail themselves of it.

In conclusion, I beg to state that my endeavour throughout has been to protect the interests of the Colony, which I consider paramount, and my efforts have met with the strongest possible opposition on the part of the Messrs Dickinson Company.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your Obedient servant,

W. Chatham

Director of Public Works,
