Our Mr Dickinson has now returned from the Continent,

and as promised in our letters of the 31st ulto and the 4th

inst, we beg to reply to your favour No 38557/1908 of the

30th ulto as follows:-

In replying to the suggestion of the Director of

Public Works as to concreting the whole of the space between

the two tracks,

it is necessary for us to remind you that in

accordance with an arrangement made with the Governor of Hong

Kong and Mr Ormsby, the then Director of Public Works, by our

Mr Dickinson, we submitted to your Department, in July 1901,

specification and drawings of the system to be adopted which,

included a drawing showing the form of permanent

way construction proposed.

The matter was referred to the Board of Trade by your

Department, and was discussed between your Department, the Board

of Trade and our Mr Dickinson.

The plan showing the form of permanent way construction

submitted by us at that time provided for a continuous beam of

concrete 6" thick by 18" in width under each rail, and only

3" of surface concrete between the tracks and for 18" outside

them.
