Hong Kong Electric Tramways.
By your favour 18168/1905 you were good
enough to inform us that you had forwarded to Hong Kong
for the full consideration of the Governor copies of two
letters, dated the 24th and 25th April 1906, which we had the
honour of addressing to you upon the question of the form of
permanent way construction demanded by the Director of Public
Works in Hong Kong.
We have heard by cable that this gentleman has declined
to modify his demands, in addition to which he is insisting
upon the whole surface of the roadway between double lines
where centre poles are to be erected being concreted.
This additional demand involves a further expenditure
of over £2,000:0:0.
Therefore, although altogether outside the terms of the
Ordinance, in the hope of effecting a compromise we cabled to
our representative instructing him to agree to this extra strip
of concrete, providing the Director of Public Works would
modify his demands in respect to the permanent way
construction.
We received a second cablegram informing us that the
