declaring that the dead body delivered up by him was that of the rebel Hung, and in this statement he was supported by six officers of Admiral Ho's command, namely, Ho Wei-tsung, Lieutenant of the right patrol of the advance division of the Admiral's force; Liu Chin-jung, Lieutenant of the right patrol of the left wing of the Ta Peng regiment; Su Tingchen, acting sergeant in charge of the military station at Li Tsun in the left wing of the Kuangchou command; Feng Hsing-kuei, Lieutenant, first on the list for promotion, of the left wing of the Kuangchou regiment; Chu Chang, sergeant, first on the list for promotion, of the left wing of the Kuangchou regiment; and Lin Shan, acting Lieutenant in the right wing of the Admiral's command.

As Hung was not dead, these declarations were of course false, but the important feature in the case is not the identity of the murdered man; it is the fact that he was murdered in British territory at the instigation of Chinese officials, for such action is in the highest degree prejudicial to the maintenance of friendly relations.

The circumstances of the case have been laid by the Governor of Hongkong before His Majesty's Government, and I have received their instructions to address to Your Highness a request that all the persons implicated may be arrested and brought to trial, and punished in accordance with their guilt. I have accordingly the honour to request that instructions may be sent to the Viceroy of the Two Kuang in that sense.

I avail, &c.,
