I am directed by the Marquess of Londonderry to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 20th
instant, in which you enclose a letter from the Hong-
kong Branch of the China Association giving the views
of their Committee which the London Committee of the
Association endorse, on the question of the Foreign
postal agencies in China.

I am to say in reply that a note will be made
of the opinions therein expressed, and that there is
no present intention of reducing the number of Brit-
ish postal agencies in China.

I am to add that a fresh Agency has been estab-
lished at Chefoo so recently as this year and that
it has moreover been made clear to the Chinese Gov-
ernment that His Majesty's Government can only agree
not to increase the number of their Agencies if a
