FOREIGN OFFICE
October 23rd 1903.
Sir:-
I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to acknowledge the receipt of your letter 36146/ of the 6th instant respecting the deportation from Amoy to Hong Kong of Miss Florence Garrett.
In reply, I am to explain that it was not intended that Miss Garrett should necessarily be maintained at the expense of the Colony.
Lord Lansdowne is not at present aware whether Miss Garrett is a native of the United Kingdom or a British Colonial subject, but Mr. Bourne, Acting Chief Justice at Shanghai, has been requested to report on the matter.
I am,
Sir,
Your most obedient humble Servant,
Charles Hardinge.
