Sir:-
With reference to your letter 4267 Secret of the 2nd ultimo, I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you a copy of a Note from the Chinese Minister respecting the conspiracy recently discovered at Canton for the overthrow of the Provincial Government.
I am to request that as soon as a report on the subject has been received from the Governor of Hong Kong, it may be communicated to this Department with the opinion of the Secretary of State for the Colonies as to the answer which should be returned to Chang Tajên.
