In my despatch No.561 of the 8th instant I reported a Supplementary Vote for meeting the cost of investigating a periodically recurring disease amongst cattle in Hongkong and the New Territories; I have now the honour to transmit for your information copies of a preliminary report by the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon and the Government Bacteriologist.
2. You will observe that this interesting report is only a preliminary one and that further investigations are proceeding. In due course, I shall address you again on the subject, meantime I can only assure you that all that is possible will be done as soon as I am in a position to ascertain in what way the Government can take action with a view to safe-guarding the food supply.
Copies of the report are being sent to the Board of Agriculture.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
ALFRED LYTTELTON, K.C., M.P.
&c., &c., &c.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
