In reply to your Despatch No. 398 of the

4th. ultimo, I have the honour to state that from information

supplied by Mr. Tan Joo Chin, one of the Opium Farmers, it

appears that the price of one tael weight of Prepared Oplum

was $2 previous to September 6th., whereas at present it is

$2.50 and that the future rate will be $3 for the same quantity.

The corresponding retail prices to purchasers in the shops are

2, 3, 34 cents per candereen, which is the 100th. part of a

tael. Mr. Tan also states that the price in the Straits Set-

tlements per tael is from $2.20 to $3 which will next year be

raised to $4 and that the present price in the retail shops

there is 3 cents per candareen.
