With reference to Mr. Chamberlain's Des-

patch No. 155 of the 1st. May, I have the honour to transmit

for your information the enclosed copies of a Notification

issued on the 1st. August last constituting Long Harbour and

Jones' Cove a Man-of-War Anchorage. I have also to forward a

copy of correspondence which has recently passed between Sir

Henry Blake and Sir Cyprian Bridge on the subject of handing

over the Peninsula between Long Harbour and Jones' Cove to

the Naval Authorities to be used as a Rifle Range. No reply

has yet been received to Sir Henry Blake's letter of the 29th.

October. In the event of the proposals therein contained being

accepted by the Naval Authorities, I have the honour to re-

quest you to be so good as to inform me whether they meet

with your approval and whether I may be authorised to complete

the transaction forthwith. An approximate valuation has been

made of the private holdings in the Peninsula, which, if the

proposals are approved, are to be resumed at the expense of

the Colonial Government. According to the valuation the full

amount of compensation for all private rights will not reach a higher figure than $391.35. The private property consists of four lots with a total area of acres 0.89, worth at a HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
