Hongkong, 23rd. August, 1897.

1 have the honour to forward the notes of

evidence which I took on the 21st. instant, in the presence and

with the assistance of the Crown Solicitor, in a charge which

1 made against Sergeant Holt for neglect of duty in not report-

ing a gambling house at No. 2 Wa Lane, and with having received

bribes not to report the said gambling house.

The charge arose out of the discoveries

made at No. 3 Bast Street on the occasion of the raid made by

was heard, he remarked to the Acting Chief Inspector who had

left the room with him "1 have not got a doliar to my name.

I have been a b y fool and shall have to go on the beach".

an admission of his guilt.

I recommend the dismissal of Sergeant

Bolt under Section 24 of Ordinance 14 of 1887.

I should mention that was obliged to

promise B.C.187 Hau Hang that I would not use him as a witness

in a criminal prosecution of Holt. If I had not done so.1

should not have got him to speak.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary.

Otherwise of course Holt might have been
