With reference to Mr. Chamberlain's Despatch

No. 366 of the 8th. ultimo, I have the honour to transmit as

requested the enclosed copy of Mr. May's letter of the 23rd.

August. 1897, in which he forwarded the notes of evidence

against and recommended the dismissal of Sergeant Holt, to-

gether with Mr. Stewart-lockhart's minute of the 23rd. August

and Governor Sir William Robinson's minute of the 24th. August

approving of Holt's dismissal. The case was reported to your

predecessor in Sir William Robinson's Despatch No. 190 of the

7th. September, 1897.

2.

The case of Sergeant Holt differed in this

important particular from those of all the other European

Officers except Witchell implicated in the Wa Lane case, that

there was direct evidence of the payment of bribes to him.

For the reason stated in Mr. May's letter referred to above

it was not possible to use the evidence of the person who

actually paid the bribe to Sergeant Holt in a criminal prose-

cution.

The cases of Sergeants Macaulay and McIver,

to which Mr. Holt refers, were reported to Mr. Chamberlain in
