We regret to have to record a most distressing fatal accident
which occurred in the New Territory on Sunday. A party of
Furopeans set out on a shooting expedition on the other side, and
on Sunday it appears were in the neighbourhood of Shateen stalki
some deer that were making themselves heard. The carty consisted
of Sergeant J.bes and Sergeant Hill of the Hongkong Police; Mr A.
McGregor of the Public Works Department, who is in charge of the
new waterworks in Kowloon: and a fourth European.
In the course of their pursuit of the deer Sergeant Lee was
manipulating the chamber of his rifle when the weapon went off
and the bullet struck Wr. McGregor in the back, on the spine,
killing him instantaneously, Yesterday afternoon the body of the
unfortunate man was brought to Hongkong by the colice launch and
placed in the mortuary chancer to await the inouest which will
take place this tornine.
Mr. McGregor had not had leave for a considerable oeriod, and
he had looked forward to the King's birthday to get an outing in
the New ferritory. Ruch syccathe is falt for Sergeant Lee in the
painful position in which he finds himself through inadvertence.
He was a great frind of Mr. McGregor, and when on leave lost no
opportunity of visiting him at the waterworks.
