As to pay I think it is distinctly good. It compares as fol-
lows with that of Home Forces.

Nearly all the Police are on Sterling and what they seem to
hanker after now is compensation for rise in exchange.
$89.88 is handsome pay for a Constable who has quarters,
light, fuel, uniform, passage home and back on leave, and a
pension at 45.
In the old days they had $40 and later $50 a month but a
pension after 15 years service. That attracted good men. I am

is the pension and I advise trying a 20 years pension first. If
that fails to attract men either an increase of pay or earlier
pension must be tried.
I quite agree as to soldiers. I never found them worth much.
H and I. The principle of selection has been affirmed by Your Excellency. It is only what obtains in the best Home Forces. It must of course be exercised with discretion. It produced no ill
results in the past.
