as Chief Justice, Sir William Goodman has not once set foot in
the Registry to my knowledge. How can he then advance such a
palpable misstatement that my work occupies me one hour a day !
My time is fully taken up from the moment I enter the office,
generally after nine in the morning, till after 4 when I leave
it. Until quite recently, besides my own work, I have been in
charge of the Land Office, and certainly devoted time to that
Department, although it was quite unnecessary, owing to the
able men to be found there.

As regards the Supreme Court, for several
years, in fact since my arrival in this Colony in January, 1898,
until this very day, I have had to work the Registry with only
one Deputy, which has kept both of us fully occupied, one
or other of the Deputies being always on leave, until the
promotion of Mr. Hazeland as Police Magistrate on 7th. June,
1901. Not having been replaced in June, 1902, I addressed a
minute to the present Chief Justice who, acquiescing in my
remarks as to the then state of affairs, forwarded it to the
Government approving of my recommendation that Mr. Hazeland
should be replaced as soon as possible. His successor,
quently appointed, has not yet assumed duties.

-ed Chief Justice, the only Deputy left me, "the courteous and
hardworking Deputy Registrar, Mr. Seth", whom he mentions in
paragraph 10 of his letter, has been taken away from the Regis-
try and converted by him into his clerk: so that while having
to attend upon the Chief Justice in his capacity of Deputy
Registrar, which in Sir William Goodman's case means a very
long time a day, he is kept to assist him in doing clerk's
work as well.
