sir,

You 34473

With reference to my telegram of the 15th.

and to your reply of the 16th. instant, I have the honour to

transmit for your information the enclosed copy of a letter

which I have received from the Right Reverend the Bishop of

Victoria, in which he points out the urgent need that exists

for an Anglican Church in Kowloon, where there is at present

very inadequate provision for Church of England Services

in spite of the large and constantly increasing English popula-

tion of that portion of the Colony.

2.

I also enclose copy of a letter (with

enclosure and plan) from Sir C. P. Chater, C.M.G., who has

made the handsome offer of $35,000 for the purpose of construc- ting the new Church, provided that the Goverment will consent

to make a free grant of the site therein referred to and shown

on the map submitted by the Architects. Messrs. Leigh and

Orange, moreover, have generously offered to undertake the

preparation of the plans and erection of the building without

charge.

3.

The Director of Public Works reports that

the site is undoubtedly a good one for the purpose, and that

it is highly improbable that it would ever be disposed of by THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE

COLONIES.
