bridge-supports at comparatively short intervals across what 1 venture to think should be an unobstructed fairway, would be likely to add to the inconvenience due to increased strength of
current.

If I may becomingly offer a suggestion I
would invite attention to the case of Sydney, a Harbour which
compares in shipping activity with Hongkong, and with which I an intimately acquainted having known it for many years. The
inhabitants of the City number about half a million and another
hundred thousand people live within easy reach of it. This great
population is divided between the two sides of the Harbour,
across which the only means of communication for foot passengers
animals and vehicles, is by ferry steamer. The ferry arrange-
ments are so comprehensive and well devised that the ships of
war and seagoing merchant ships using the port are not in-
convenienced, and the population is conveyed quickly and comfort-
ably to a variety of points.
