1. With the view of supplying the Civil Service of Hong Kong, the Straits Settlements, and the Federated Malay States, Cadetships have been established, the holders of which are required to serve in the above mentioned Colonies or States, and to devote themselves for a certain time after their arrival in the East to learning a native language. Cadets appointed to, this service will in the first instance be allotted to one or other of the Colonies
in question, and will, as a rule, look for but it must be distinctly understood
promotion only in that Colony
fly or that they will be able to be transferred at any time from one to another, at the
discretion of the Secretary of State, without being given compensation for any special local privileges or allowances.
2. The Cadets, who must be natural-born British subjects, are selected by open competitive examination* held by the Civil Service Commissioners, to whom all inquiries on the subject should be addressed.
The examination for these appointments will, as a rule, be held in the month of August, in those years in which vacancies have occurred, simultaneously with the examination for the Civil Service of India. Candidates must be between the ages of 21 and 24 on the first day of August in the year in which the examination is held.
* A separate paper is issued by the Civil Service Commission, containing information in regard to the Examination.

† In reckoning age for competition, members of the Militia, the Imperial Yeomanry, the Honourable Artillery Company, or the Volunteers (whether commissioned or commissioned), may deduct from their actual age any time spent on actual military service in connection with the war in South Africa, such time being reckoned by the number of days for which they received Army Pay.
