With reference to your Despatch No. 57 of
25th. February, 1902, I have the honour to inform you that
the post of Member of the New Territories Land Court became
vacant on the 22nd. April last by the resignation of Mr.
H. L. Dennys, who has left the Colony.
2.
I am of opinion that after the important
cases referred to in my Despatch No. 289 of the 17th. instant
have been disposed of, the rest of the outstanding cases may
be dealt with by one judicial officer. To assist Mr. Gompertz
in adjudicating upon the former, however, I have considered
it advisable to temporarily appoint Mr. Bruce Shepherd, Land
Officer, a Member of the Court upon the same terms as those
granted to Mr. Dennys, namely 750 for each sitting of the Court. I am satisfied that Mr. Shepherd's long experience in
matters affecting land will make him a most valuable coadjutor
to Mr. Gompertz.
3.
I have caused Mr. Shepherd's appointment
to be gazetted with effect from the 12th. ultimo, and I have
to ask for your approval of the course which I have adopted.
