proposals for increased revenue is an item of $6,000 which
they anticipate would be realized by donations from the Chinese
Theatres if the Goverment would grant them permission to
give one all-night performance in each week. In the case of
one Theatre which is situated near the Goverment Civil Hospital, the Principal Civil Medical Officer urged that such permission should be refused as frequent complaints had been received
from patients that their rest was disturbed by the noise of
gongs and cymbals which are the usual accompaniment of a Chinese theatrical performance. In the case of another Theatre it was represented to me that the noise of an all-night perfor- mance would seriously inconvenience the residents in the
Caine and Bonham Roads which lie in its vicinity. I therefore refused to sanction any such performances, and as an alternative the Committee have embodied in their report a request that the Goverment will grant an annual sum of $6,000 in aid of the funds of the hospital. This proposal I have the honour to submit for your favourable consideration.
