Sir,
I have the honour to forward you a letter
which I have received from Tai Shiu Lung, Clerk in the Crown
Lands and Survey branch of this Department.
Having absented himself without leave
and without any previous notice, (his letter reaching me after
his departure) he suggests that his brother should carry on his
work during his absence, so as to allow him to resume his duties
on his return.
The Honourable
On receipt of the letter, I gave instruc-
tions that Tai's brother was not to be allowed to carry on his
work, and I endeavoured to find a suitable successor to fill his
post, with a view to recommending Tai's immediate dismissal.
It has, however, been discovered mean-
while that a number of Squatters' licences are missing, in
connection with which no fees have been paid into the Treasury,
and I therefore report the matter at once. The attached list
contains a statement of the licences referred to, the total
amount being $270.90.
The practice followed in the issue of
Squatters' licences is as follows:
The Squatters come to this office and
receive orders, as per annexed form, to the Treasury to accept the amounts due by them in the shape of fees. They present these orders, along with the money, at the Treasury when the receipt portion of the form is returned to them, duly signed and chopped. On their producing these receipts at this
