I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your Despatch No. 443 of the 24th. December last

relative to the employment and salaries of Mr. W. Curwen and

Mr. J. J. Bullin.

2.

In Mr. Bullin's case it was intended that

the allowances to which you refer, being of the nature of

personal allowances, would be merged in salary and therefore

pensionable, and Mr. Bullin was informed to this effect. I

regret this point was not made clear in my Despatch No. 499

of the 13th. November last, and I now have the honour to ask

for your consent to this arrangement. I would point out that

the salary formerly attaching to the post which Mr. Bullin

holds was $1,200 rising to $1,800 per annum.

3.

With regard to Mr. Curwen's salary and

employment I addressed you in my Despatch No. 126 of the 13th.

March last, which contains the information asked for in para-

graph 3 of your Despatch under acknowledgment.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
