Sir,

74

Government Civil Medical Department,

Hongkong, 21st. March, 1903.

With reference to the Estimates for 1904,

I have the honour to make the following recommendations:-

1.

That the two Nurses doing duty in the

Receiving Ward be paid $144 a year instead of as at present $108.

These Nurses are always on duty in the Receiving Ward and it is

absolutely necessary that they should be able to speak and

understand English. We have found it impossible within the last

12 months to obtain suitable Nurses for this work at $108 a year.

Every one nearly spplying for information addresses one of these

Nurses, as the Receiving Ward is the one strangers first go to.

2.

An extra messenger is required at $96 a

year, this is occasioned by the increase in the messages, chits,

notices of illness &c.

Very frequently we have had to use one

of the coolies but they cannot be spared for this work.

3.

I recommend that the anahs (Laundress) be

0

all paid the same, viz:- £96 a month.)

At present one at the Civil Hospital

receives $96 and the other $84, also the one at the Maternity

Hospital receives $84. The Matron says this difference in pay

causes dissatisfaction and she can only obtain very inferior

amahs at $84 a year.

4.

Matron's Chair Allowance.

At present the Matron draws $5 a month for

conveyance viz:- one-twelfth of the amount allowed for the

Matron and Sisters.

The Honourable

The Colonial Secretary.

As she frequently has to visit Kennedy

Town
