Extract from a Minute by the Colonial Secretary.

The only recommendations I have to make are the

following:-

TREASURY.

a

Schedule of Chinese Clerkships &c.

Third Shroff might be put in Class VII at $480

to $600.

Collector of Village Rates on next vacancy might

be made $480 - $600 and Assistant Collector

Village Rates might be put in Class VIII ($240

to $420).

HARBOUR DEPARTMENT.- Interpreters at Hunghom and Shamshuipo

Both these posts (which are more clerical than Interpretatorial) might be put in class VIII of

Classification Scheme - $240 to $420 by $60

biennially. It is not possible to get a trust-

worthy clerk at $204 per annun.

LAND OFFICE.

Assistant Clerk, and Clerk, New Territory.

I think both these posts should be brought under

the Classification Scheme at $480 to $600 by

$60 biennially. The present holders might be

granted biennial increments of $60 from 1st

January 1904 in order to effect that object. The

work in the Land Office requires a better stamp

of clerk than can be got to stay on $860 per

annum.

GAOL DEPARTMENT. - Clerk. This clerk was appointed for

looking after the printing work which is daily

increasing in volume. I think the post might be

brought
